Ziccolella School celebrates Black History Month Students share their work with Principal Griggs Spring planting at The Graham School Ziccolella elementary students participate in The Hour of Code Superintendent's Corner It is with great pleasure that I welcome back our students, teachers, and staff to the 2019-2020 school year – a year filled with promise and achievement! As Superintendent of the Greenburgh Graham UFSD, it is my mission to ensure that our students receive the education and services necessary for them to advance into society as adults with a clear focus, a sense of confidence to pursue their dreams and a purpose that will continue to cultivate as they advance in life and on to their future careers. I am amazed every day as I watch our students grow academically and socially, as I listen to their success stories and how hard they strive to make today just a little bit better than yesterday. Struggles are a part of our everyday lives, and we encourage our students to embrace these obstacles by giving them the tools they need to manage stressful situations. We have the power to make a positive impact on the lives of our students every day. It is up to us to use this influence to remove barriers, support students in their challenges, and give them access to the knowledge and information that will enable them to reach their full potential. Our teachers, staff, and administrators have been working diligently in preparation for the new school year to ensure that we meet the developmental needs of our students in order for them to begin to form the basis of ideas and actions; giving them the opportunity to be an integral part of our society. The integration of the Wilson Reading Program over the past 2-years has proven extremely effective as evidenced by the increase in students' ELA scores. The District utilizes the I-Ready assessment tool for intervention in math and reading and this year we launched Mastery Connect. This online assessment is an advanced academic evaluation program that directly targets the students' level of achievement and provides parents/guardians with a "real-time" snapshot of students' academic progress. The District has an ongoing partnership with Hewlett Packard to advance our District’s technology initiatives, offer Adobe certification for our high school students and enhance our instructional program to ensure college and career technology-readiness for our students. This school-year we launched the Culinary Cafe along with the Greenhouse program giving all of our students, from kindergarten through high school, the opportunity to understand the importance of nutrition and the positive effects it has on our bodies and our minds. In addition, these programs give our high school students the opportunity to pursue culinary and horticultural trades and begin acquiring the certifications necessary to begin their careers in these domains. The District continues to partner with Southern Westchester BOCES which offers our high school students a variety of trades in their fields of interest. Our "Every Student Every Day" program emphasizes the benefits of students attending school every day. This program underscores the importance of student attendance and provides parents and guardians the support they need to ensure that their child/children benefit daily from a curriculum that is designed to enhance their academic, social and emotional achievements. I truly believe the collaborative efforts of our teachers, staff, and parents/guardians along with the partnerships we have forged with our community will give our children the tools they need to reach their full potential. Levy District Vision Statement While we may see Greenburgh Graham as an oasis for our students and families, many of them initially, and currently, see us as a sub-system of a larger system that has failed them. A system that does not believe in their abilities, respect their differences and effectively address their challenges. More importantly, a system that does not adequately prepare them for the future because, whether consciously or unconsciously, they are not seen as future contributors to society. Many of our students come to us believing that they have already failed. Hope is not a driving force in their lives. The goal is not to make them believe in what we are now. It is to become a place they can believe in. To become a place that addresses their most basic needs, their psychological needs, and their self-fulfillment needs. Students will not reach the stage of self-actualization upon graduation; however, we must see it as our mission to instill in every student he belief in his or her potential. We have a responsibility to prepare them for the world in its totality, not just reading, writing and arithmetic. We must prepare our students to be life-long learners, give them marketable skills for the workforce, and the ability and confidence to successfully navigate adulthood. This will not be achievable if we do not address the whole student.
